Altair stepped into Vandal’s Cafe with a sense of familiarity, despite it being his workplace. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mixed with the faint scent of bicycle grease greeted him as he glanced around, spotting his classmates Ben and Choi already seated at a corner table.

“Hey, Altair! Over here!” Ben waved enthusiastically, a wide grin spreading across his face. Altair grinned back and made his way over, weaving through tables occupied by patrons sipping their drinks and chatting animatedly.

“Hey guys, how’s it going?” Altair asked as he slid into the seat beside Ben. Choi nodded in greeting, his attention momentarily diverted as he scanned the menu on the table.

“We’re good. Just trying to figure out what to order,” Ben replied, his gaze shifting to the chalkboard menu hanging behind the counter. “I heard they’ve got a new seasonal blend in. Might give that a try.”

Altair glanced up at the menu board, noting the intricate chalk art depicting various coffee drinks and pastries. “Sounds good. I might go for the same.”

As they placed their orders with the barista, Mr. Rod Vandal the owner of Vandal’s cafe appeared from behind the counter, a warm smile on her face. “Hey there, Altair. Good to see you and your friends here. Busy day?”

“A bit, Mr. Vandal. Orientation was something else,” Altair replied with a chuckle. “But it’s good to unwind here.”

Mr. Vandal nodded knowingly, his gaze briefly flickering with pride as he looked at Altair. “Well, make yourselves comfortable. I’ll have your drinks out shortly.”

With that, he disappeared back into the bustling kitchen, leaving the trio to chat amongst themselves. Ben leaned in, his voice lowered slightly. “So, Altair, how’s the courier gig going? Making good money?”

Altair shrugged nonchalantly. “It’s not bad. Helps with some extra cash for things I want to do.” He paused, glancing around to make sure no one was eavesdropping before continuing in a quieter tone, “And it’s fun sometimes, especially the LBAR stuff. Did you guys see the latest update? They added a new puzzle challenge near the park.”

Choi’s eyes lit up with interest. “No way! I haven’t been keeping up with it lately. How tough is it?”

Altair leaned back, recalling his recent adventures in the game. “It’s tricky but doable. You have to scan QR codes hidden around the park, and each one gives you a piece of a puzzle. Once you collect them all, you unlock this virtual treasure hunt. I haven’t cracked it yet, though.”

Their conversation drifted to lighter topics as Mr. Vandal returned with their drinks and a plate of freshly baked cookies, insisting they try the latest batch. They laughed and shared stories from their first day of senior high, discussing teachers, classes, and the notorious school gossip.

The afternoon sun began to filter through the cafe’s large windows, casting a warm glow over their table. Altair felt a sense of contentment settle over him as he listened to his friends’ banter, sipping his coffee and enjoying the simple pleasures of good company and a familiar place.

As the afternoon wore on, they eventually parted ways, each heading home with promises to meet up again soon. Altair waved goodbye to Mr. Vandal and stepped out into the bustling street, the buzz of the city around him a stark contrast to the cozy ambiance of Vandal’s Cafe.

With a smile on his face and thoughts of the next LBAR challenge already forming in his mind, Altair headed towards the bus stop, eager for whatever adventures awaited him next.
As Altair waited at the bus stop, his attention was drawn to a white van parked nearby, marked with the acronym C.E.N.T.E.R. Intrigued, he watched as technicians busily set up equipment around the vehicle. The logo on the van indicated it belonged to CENTER Labs, also known as Cyberia Ecommerce Network Technology and Electronics Research Labs.

“Hey, isn’t that CENTER Labs?” Ben’s voice broke into his thoughts. Altair turned to see his friend had followed him out of the cafe.

“Yeah, looks like it,” Altair replied. “They’re setting up something big.”

A technician from the van, noticing their curiosity, approached with a friendly smile. “Interested in what we’re doing here?”

Altair nodded. “Yeah, what’s all this about?”

“We’re setting up new Wi-Fi hotspots around the city,” the technician explained. “Part of a new initiative involving CENTER Labs, local private security firms, and the government. It’s called the Cyberia Enhanced Network Technology Expansion Project.”

“Sounds impressive,” Ben remarked. “What’s the goal?”

“Essentially, it’s a comprehensive network to improve public safety and convenience,” the technician continued. “The private security companies provide surveillance systems, the government handles law enforcement, and CENTER Labs supplies the data centers and equipment upgrades. All to ensure a safer city and even offer free high-speed internet.”

Altair’s eyes widened in interest. “So, free Wi-Fi everywhere?”

“Exactly. Techno Link Data and Network Services, or TLDNS, is handling the public internet services. It’s all part of the memorandum of agreement,” the technician said, handing them a flyer detailing the project.

“That’s amazing,” Ben said, skimming through the flyer. “But I’ve heard some people are worried about privacy issues.”

The technician nodded. “It’s true, there have been concerns. But the majority are excited about the benefits, like the free premium apps and high-speed internet.”

As the technician walked away to continue his work, Altair and Ben exchanged glances.

“Imagine playing LBAR with uninterrupted high-speed internet,” Altair mused. “It’d be a game-changer.”

“No kidding,” Ben agreed. “But it does make you think about the privacy trade-offs.”

“Yeah, but it seems like most people are on board,” Altair replied, pocketing the flyer. “Guess we’ll see how it plays out.”

Just then, Choi joined them, looking curiously at the van. “What’s up?”

Altair filled him in quickly. “They’re setting up new Wi-Fi hotspots all over the city. Free high-speed internet, courtesy of CENTER Labs and some government deal.”

Choi raised an eyebrow. “Nice. But what’s the catch?”

“Surveillance and data sharing with the police,” Ben said. “But hey, free internet, right?”

Choi shrugged. “I guess it’s a fair trade. Let’s see how it goes.”
